A multimedia project based on the inscrutable invented character from a Chinese ceremonial bank-note, combining performance, painting, prints, sculpture, a song and a book, 'The story of Lee Ping Zing'.

Lee Ping Zing started life on a Chinese ceremonial bank note that I found in a New York Chinese supermarket. They are used to burn these at funerals to bring the deceased riches in the next life. I painted about fifty of these notes , always retaining the Lee's face, yet changing his surroundings. I then illustrated the pictures with words in stead of the usual process of illustrating the text with images. And so the Lee Ping Zing project grew over a five year period it covered all areas of my work: painting, prints, sculpture , a performance, a recorded song, t-shirts, gold fabric and a book. Lee Ping Zing became a kind of legend like Tintin or Mickey Mouse, though not as famous.

The huge body of work comprising over 300 pieces was destined to be shown with Jibby Beane in what was to be London's largest commercial space, that alas never materialised. In spite of that, Lee Ping Zing received much media coverage. BZW bank bought some silkscreens and he appeared alongside Langlands and Bell, David Bowie and Brian Eno in interactive digital show called "Through the looking glass" in 1997.

The end of the project was marked by a small exhibition and performance that took place at the Art Factory in 1999.
